Frequently asked questions

Account & sign-in

How do I create an account?

Download the BikeMates app from the App Store or the Google Play Store and sign in with your Google or Apple account. A separate registration is not necessary — your profile is created automatically.

Can I sign in without Google or Apple?

No, signing in is only possible via Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In. Registration with an email address and password is not provided.

Signing in takes a very long time — is that normal?

Yes. On some Android devices (Xiaomi in particular), the first Google sign-in can take up to 60 seconds because the system runs security checks in the background. If the loading screen stays up for more than three minutes, close the app and try again.

How can I delete my account?

Send us an email to info@bikemates.eu with the subject “Delete account” and the email address you are signed in with. We will delete your account and all associated data within 14 days.

Tracker & ride recording

How does ride recording work?

Open the tracker in the app and tap the record symbol between our logo and your profile picture. The app records speed, route and — if calibrated — the lean angle. Once you have finished the ride, your recording is saved and you can share it with friends.

How is the lean angle measured?

The lean angle is calculated using the internal sensors of your smartphone. For this, BikeMates uses a combination of accelerometer, gyro and GPS data. The measurement is calibrated automatically as soon as you have added and selected your bike in the app and start riding — you do not have to set anything manually. For even more precise results you can use the optional PerformanceTracker.

What does 'calibration' mean and how does it work?

So that BikeMates can calculate the lean angle correctly, the app has to know how your smartphone (or the PerformanceTracker) is mounted on the motorcycle. This mapping is called calibration. Calibration runs fully automatically in the background: all you need to do is add a bike in the app and select it for the recording. As soon as you set off (from approx. 10 km/h), the app collects sensor data for a few seconds and calculates the orientation from it. If the mounting position changes (e.g. the phone mount is knocked out of place), the app detects this automatically and recalibrates itself.

Why do I have to add a bike before calibration works?

The calibration is saved per bike. Since every motorcycle has a different handlebar geometry and mount position, BikeMates needs this mapping in order to interpret the sensor values correctly. Without a bike added, no calibration can take place.

My lean angle is not displayed correctly — what can I do?

Check the following points:

  1. Is a bike added and selected?
  2. Was the calibration completed successfully? Calibration needs a few seconds of calm riding in a straight line.
  3. Does the smartphone sit firmly in the mount?

If the lean angle is still not displayed correctly after several minutes of riding, stop the recording and reset the calibration of the smartphone tilt sensor in the settings of your bike. Then start the recording again and ride a short distance in a straight line.

Can I look at recorded rides afterwards?

Yes. You will find all saved rides in the app in your ride history. Detected curves are shown on the map colour-coded by lean angle — including statistics such as top speed, distance and maximum lean angle.

Crash Detection & emergency contacts

How do I activate Crash Detection?

Crash Detection is permanently active while a recording is running and cannot be switched off.

How does Crash Detection work?

During a recording, BikeMates continuously analyses the sensor data of your smartphone (or of the PerformanceTracker). If the system detects a combination of a strong impact, a sudden loss of speed and a change of position, an alarm is triggered. You then have a countdown in which to cancel the alarm if it is a false alarm. If you do not react, the emergency contacts you have stored are informed by text message with your location and a link to your ride history of the last five minutes. In addition, your friends in the app are informed about the incident by push notification.

How do I store emergency contacts?

You can add emergency contacts in the profile settings of the app. Store the phone numbers of the people who should be notified in an emergency there. The app needs the SMS permission in order to be able to send messages in an emergency. Please note: sending text messages is currently only available on Android. On iOS your friends are informed exclusively by push notification instead.

Can I test Crash Detection?

Yes. The settings of the app include a test function for Crash Detection. A shortened countdown is started and your emergency contacts receive a test text message with a corresponding note.

How long is the countdown after a detected impact?

The length of the countdown depends on the strength of the detected impact. For unambiguous crashes the countdown is shorter (from 15 seconds) so that help can be called more quickly. In less clear-cut situations it is longer (up to 60 seconds) so that you have enough time to cancel a false alarm. In test mode it is always 15 seconds.

Does the app also detect a tip-over while stationary?

Yes. BikeMates has a separate tip-over detection that also works at low speeds or while stationary. In this case the countdown is considerably longer at 2 minutes, because the probability of a serious injury is lower.

What happens if I have no mobile reception?

The app tries to send the emergency text message even when reception is poor. If sending fails, it is repeated automatically as soon as there is a connection again. At the same time your location is also transmitted to the server via the internet, so that your friends can see your last known whereabouts.

Navigation & hazard warner

Which navigation modes are there?

BikeMates offers three modes: classic destination navigation (fastest or curviest route), the round trip mode (you enter a desired distance and receive a round route starting from your location) and the follow mode (you follow a friend on the map in real time).

How does the voice guidance work?

Navigation instructions are output as audio signals through the speaker or your Bluetooth intercom (e.g. Sena, Cardo). The announcements are given in several stages — for example at 1000 m, 500 m and shortly before the turn — so that you can get your bearings in good time without looking at the display.

What is the hazard warner?

The hazard warner informs you acoustically about upcoming hazard spots: speed cameras (fixed, mobile, average speed), roadworks, traffic jams, accidents, obstacles, slippery roads, fog and more. The warnings are output through your intercom and are based on a continuously updated database. In the settings you can define which types of warning you want to hear.

Does the hazard warner also work without navigation?

Yes. The hazard warner is independent of the navigation and works as soon as you start a recording. The warnings are triggered based on your direction of travel and your distance to the hazard spot.

Are the warnings also played through my intercom?

Yes. BikeMates is optimised for use with Bluetooth intercom systems. Both navigation voice guidance and hazard warnings run directly through the Bluetooth audio connection of your helmet. In the settings you can also activate the SCO output (phone channel) — this is particularly helpful when you are talking to fellow riders through your intercom at the same time, because the warning then briefly interrupts the intercom’s communication.

Can I test the hazard warner?

Yes. In the settings of the app you will find a test button that plays an example warning. This lets you check in advance whether audio playback through your intercom or your speaker works as intended.

What happens if I deviate from the route?

BikeMates automatically detects when you leave the planned route and calculates a new route to your destination in the background (automatic rerouting). You then receive an updated voice instruction for the next turn.

PerformanceTracker

What is the PerformanceTracker?

The PerformanceTracker is an external Bluetooth sensor that you can attach to your motorcycle. It measures lean angle and G-forces considerably more precisely and independently of the smartphone, because it is mounted firmly on the vehicle, is optimised for measuring the lean angle of motorcycles and is not affected by vibrations of the phone mount. You will find it in the built-in shop of the app.

Do I have to connect the PerformanceTracker manually?

No. Once you have linked the PerformanceTracker to one of your bikes in the app, the app connects automatically via Bluetooth for every recording. If the connection drops while you ride, the app automatically tries to re-establish it.

Does the PerformanceTracker need calibration as well?

Yes, just as with the smartphone, the calibration of the PerformanceTracker runs fully automatically. The prerequisite is that a bike has been added and selected and that you ride straight ahead for a few seconds at at least approx. 10 km/h. The calibration is saved per bike — if you mount the tracker on another motorcycle, it is recalibrated automatically.

What happens if the mounting position of the tracker changes?

The app continuously monitors whether the sensor values match the saved calibration. If it detects a clear deviation, the calibration is reset automatically and carried out again the next time you ride straight ahead.

Can I use the PerformanceTracker and the smartphone at the same time?

No. When a PerformanceTracker is connected, BikeMates uses only its sensor data for the lean angle, because that data is more precise than the smartphone’s. The smartphone sensors are deactivated automatically in this case.

TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring)

What are the TPMS sensors?

The TPMS sensors (tyre pressure monitoring system) are small Bluetooth valve caps that measure the pressure and the temperature of your tyres in real time. The values are shown directly on the display while you ride. In the event of critical pressure deviations or communication failures you are warned acoustically. You will find the sensors in the built-in shop of the app.

How do I set up the TPMS sensors?

After the purchase you fit the valve caps to the front and the rear wheel. In the app you add the sensors under your bike and enter the target tyre pressure as well as the target temperature. The app then detects the sensors automatically via Bluetooth as soon as you start a recording.

How precise are the pressure warnings?

The app warns in two stages: if there is a slight loss of pressure below the target pressure you have set, you receive an advisory warning. If the pressure drops considerably further, a critical warning is triggered. The warnings are output both visually on the display and acoustically (through the speaker or your intercom).

What does the temperature reading of the TPMS sensors mean?

The tyre temperature is shown as an additional indicator. When the tyre reaches the target temperature you have stored, the app signals that the tyre has reached its optimum operating temperature. That way you know when your tyres have built up grip.

What happens if a TPMS sensor stops sending data?

If a sensor supplies no data for several minutes, the app shows a communication warning. This can happen when the sensor’s battery is weak or the sensor is out of range. In this case, check that the valve cap is seated correctly and that Bluetooth is activated on your smartphone.

Bluetooth & auto-start

What is the Bluetooth auto-start?

On Android you can define one or more Bluetooth devices (e.g. your intercom) as a trigger in the app. When your smartphone connects to one of these devices, BikeMates starts the recording automatically — you do not even have to open the app. When you switch off your intercom, the recording is stopped automatically.

On iOS you can set up the same behaviour with the Apple Shortcuts app by creating an automation for the Bluetooth connection with your intercom.

My Bluetooth auto-start does not work — what can I do?

Make sure that

  1. the Bluetooth permission has been granted in the system settings,
  2. the device you want is selected in the app under auto-start devices,
  3. the app is allowed to run in the background and battery optimisation is deactivated, and
  4. on Xiaomi/MIUI devices: auto-start for BikeMates is permitted in the security settings.
Why does my intercom constantly start and stop the recording?

Some intercom systems (e.g. the Sena 50B) use several Bluetooth profiles at the same time (audio, phone, control). When switching between profiles, the device briefly disconnects and connects again. BikeMates takes this behaviour into account: an auto-stop is only triggered after a short waiting time, in order to absorb such profile changes.

If you still have problems, contact us using the contact form at the end of this page and tell us which smartphone you use, the version of its operating system and the model designation of the Bluetooth device that is meant to trigger the auto-start.

Can BikeMates be shown over the lock screen?

Yes. If you activate the “Show over lock screen” option, BikeMates opens automatically during an active recording when you switch on your smartphone — even without unlocking it. That way you always have speed and lean angle in view without having to operate the phone. Please note: this function is currently only available on Android.

What is the mini overlay (bubble)?

If you leave BikeMates without stopping the recording, a small floating window (bubble) appears on your screen. It shows speed and lean angle. Tapping the bubble takes you back to the app. The bubble can be positioned freely on the screen. Please note: this function is currently only available on Android and requires the system permission “Display over other apps”.

Community & friends

Can I found my own community?

No. In BikeMates every country is represented by exactly one exclusive partner community. This is how we make sure that all riders of a region come together in one place, that moderation is consistent and that the quality of the community is preserved in the long term.

How do I find other bikers?

In BikeMates every country has its own exclusive partner community. Join it to get to know bikers from your area.

You can also find other riders via the profile search and send them a friend request.

What is the live location?

You can share your location with your friends in real time. That way you can see each other on the map on rides together. The live location is only shared during an active recording and is visible exclusively to your friends. With the “Protect home” function you can additionally define an area around where you live — as soon as you are inside this area, your location is hidden automatically, so nobody can see where you live.

What are group tours?

With the group tour function you can ride together as a group. A Ride Leader creates the tour and shares an invitation code. All participants see each other on the map, and participants who are not the leader automatically follow the Ride Leader’s route. The positions are updated every 10 seconds. Participants who move too far away from the group are removed from the tour automatically.

How does the messenger work?

BikeMates has a built-in messenger with one-to-one and group chats. You can send text and voice messages as well as share pictures. Within communities there are separate channels. The messenger works independently of third-party services, via BikeMates’ own infrastructure.

GoldBiker membership

What is the GoldBiker membership?

The GoldBiker membership is an optional premium membership that unlocks additional features for you for one year. It is purchased as a one-off annual fee through the App Store or the Google Play Store — it is not a subscription and does not renew automatically.

How do I buy the GoldBiker membership?

The purchase is triggered directly in the app and handled through your app store account (Google Play or Apple App Store). Payment and billing are carried out by Google or Apple — BikeMates does not receive access to your payment data.

Shop & orders

How does the shop work?

In the BikeMates shop you will find accessories such as the PerformanceTracker and TPMS sensors as well as products from our partner communities. Payment is made securely through the payment service provider Stripe. After the purchase you receive an order confirmation by email.

Who is the seller of my order?

The shop contains products from the app operator and from third parties (marketplace). The respective seller is shown to you on the product page. If you have questions about orders from third parties, please contact the respective seller directly.

How can I withdraw from a purchase?

You have 14 days from receipt of the goods to withdraw from your purchase. You can initiate the withdrawal directly in the app via the order details. Please note that for marketplace orders the withdrawal policy of the respective seller applies.

Where do I find my invoices?

You will find your invoices in the app under your orders. For every completed order you can open the invoice as a PDF and download it.

Can I track my order?

Yes. As soon as your order has been dispatched, the status in your order overview changes to “Dispatched”. Depending on the seller you will also receive a tracking number.

Permissions & technology

Which devices are supported?

BikeMates is available for Android and iOS. The app requires at least Android 9 or iOS 16 (iPhone 12 or newer). For optimum performance we recommend an up-to-date operating system.

Are there differences between Android and iOS?

Yes. Some functions are available on Android only: the mini overlay (bubble), display over the lock screen and the automatic sending of text messages on fall detection. These restrictions result from technical requirements of the iOS platform, which does not permit certain background services and system access.

Which permissions does the app need and why?

BikeMates requests several permissions, each of which serves a specific purpose:

  • Location (incl. background) — Required for ride recording, navigation, the hazard warner and the live location. The background permission ensures that the recording keeps running even when the display is locked.
  • Bluetooth — Required for the connection to the PerformanceTracker, to TPMS sensors and for the Bluetooth auto-start.
  • Notifications — So that you can receive push messages (chat messages, community updates, crash notifications from friends).
  • SMS — Optional, used exclusively for fall detection, in order to automatically send text messages to your emergency contacts in an emergency.
  • Contacts — Optional, so that you can conveniently pick emergency contacts from your address book. You can also enter numbers manually.
  • Microphone — Required for recording voice messages in the messenger.
  • Display over other apps (overlay) — Required for the mini overlay (bubble) that shows speed and lean angle when you leave the app.

None of these permissions is used for advertising, tracking or analytics.

Why is the location needed in the background?

So that the recording keeps running even with the display switched off or in the background, BikeMates needs the permission for background location. Without this permission the recording would stop as soon as you lock the phone or open another app.

The app uses a lot of battery — can I do anything about it?

During an active recording, BikeMates uses GPS, sensors and Bluetooth at the same time — which naturally consumes more battery. We recommend a phone mount with a charging function. Outside of a recording, the app automatically reduces the GPS frequency to a minimum.

Where is my data stored?

All data is stored exclusively on our own servers in the European Union. There is no tracking, no third-party analytics services and no sharing of data. BikeMates is fully GDPR-compliant.
